Preliminary Portfolio | Fall 2009

Exterior Architecture | Victorian

Architecture is not one of my strong points…. for no other reason then I’m just not interested in it whatsoever. I love looking at other photographer’s work, but when it comes to shooting it, I just don’t enjoy it.

I went with the Victorian theme for this one because I found a couple of houses that came straight out of that era, and they’re just so pretty. I went with a triadic colour theme; blue, orange and green and it turned out fairly well. I saturated the colours of course to bring out some interest and pumped up the sky because the day I shot unfortunately was bland.

Colour Theme | Triadic | blue, green, orange

Environmental Portrait | Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau is one of my favourite design eras. Somewhat whimsical, fantastical… elegant and pretty. Lot’s of elaborate and flowy flower designs. I shot this portrait in the Byward Market downtown. The stone design in the courtyard mixed with the old buildings and the vine covered canopy definitely made this spot perfect. The light that day was perfect! I didn’t need to turn on my SBs at all, so all the lighting in the image is natural.

Equipment | Nikon D700 | 24mm 2.8 lens| gold bounce card | ambient light

Consumer portrait! I am very pleased with how this turned out. A tad disappointed in myself for over-Photoshopping the realism out of it, but that’s what I needed to do to emulate the era. I love the softness of the light, the warmth created by the red gel and the texture of the fur scarf.

And isn’t that the cutest hat?

Colour Theme | Monochromatic | Red | warm tones
Equipment| Nikon D3 | 60mm 2.8 lens | Speedo 850 pack | 1 main, 1 fill, 1 kicker, 1 hairlight and a bounce card.

Jonathan Howse was a lucky find… I think I met him a week before we shot haha I really wanted to do a 60s|70s shoot, and nothing reminds me more of that time then the beard. Luckily he was cool enough to sit for me.

The backdrop seemed like a good idea at the time, however it turned into a pain for post production. The colour was too hard on the eyes (almost a lime green) and the print far too busy… not to mention distracting when the lines weren’t straight. The light only accented the wrinkles in the fabric and I ended up spending hours “steaming” it in Photoshop. Nonetheless, I love how it turned out.

Jell-O! This was fun because I used some gels and plexy glass, got a pretty nice reflection and glowing, yummy delicious looking Jell-o!  Decent layout, nothing spectacular, but the colours make me happy :)

Colour Theme | Complimentary | purple, yellow
Equipment | Nikon D3 | 105 mm 2.8 lens | 2 main, many silver bouncers

Me :) Pretty much sums that one up haha

I had a few ideas I wanted to try, and I will probably attempt some before final portfolio… but for now… this is me with my Grandfather’s old Minolta <3

The nicest lady let me shoot her house yesterday… and what an incredibly pretty house! I love the tone of this image…. with the sky, the trees and just the almost eerie feeling of the hedges. This is still just a quick run through my HDR program, but it looks pretty sweet!

Check out the Gonq tab for more shots :)

HDR | Tisdale Farm

Growing up this was my favourite place to go on holidays. My great Grandpa Tisdale lived on this farm and was constantly inventing machines to help him around the farm. He passed away almost two years ago, but the barn is still filled with his memories. Here are a few quick HDR shots inside the barn…
